On October 6, 2025, Altoona Area Junior High School and Bellwood-Antis Middle School welcomed the Beating the Odds Foundation for a motivational assembly that left a lasting impact on more than 900 students—550 at Altoona and 350 at Bellwood.
The event began with a heartfelt address from Rocco Scalzi, founder of the Beating the Odds Foundation, who shared his personal story of overcoming obstacles and encouraged students to persevere through life’s challenges. This message set the stage for the keynote speaker, retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel John Schaefer.
Schaefer, who serves as a Quarterback of Life®, captivated students with his journey of resilience, determination, and growth. Raised by his grandmother and a father battling post-war trauma, Schaefer overcame a turbulent childhood to become a straight-A student and a decorated Marine Corps officer. He emphasized to students that ordinary people can do extraordinary things, inspiring them to focus on their education, character, and goals.
The assemblies also marked the launch of the Quarterbacks of Life® Student Success & Leadership Program at both schools. Thanks to John Schaefer’s recent 200-mile ultramarathon fundraising effort, Altoona Area and Bellwood-Antis educators are receiving free access to the program’s online teacher portal for the 2025–2026 school year. This portal provides valuable tools and resources to help students build confidence, leadership, and perseverance.
